Fandangle returns after strong first weekend
The Fort Griffin Fandangle opened its 87th season this past weekend to strong attendance, welcoming more than 1,500 guests over the course of its first two shows.
An estimated 600 people filled the stands Friday night for opening night, followed by a crowd of approximately 900 on Saturday. Strong statewide marketing efforts and continued outreach to first-time guests played a key role in the turnout.
Prior to each show, Director Lorna Ayers asked for a show of hands from first-time attendees. On both nights, more than half of those in the audience indicated it was their first time seeing the Fandangle. Guests came from across Texas, with each region of the state represented, along with several out-of-state visitors—including one from Germany.
“The cast sees the show come together as a whole on the Monday before opening night,” said Ayers. “And honestly, we all got to see areas where people were needed outside the standard roles they had been filling for six weeks. In true Fandangle spirit, everyone stepped up to fill in where there was a need—whether on the stage, backstage, or hooking up a team of mules—and created a show that flowed without a hitch. This cast and crew are amazing.”
Friday’s performance included a special moment before the opening act, when Ben Hawkins arrived by wagon and proposed on stage to Elizabeth Martin. The surprise engagement added another chapter to the Martin family’s long connection to the Fandangle.
Two final performances of the 2025 Fandangle season are scheduled for this Friday and Saturday, June 27–28. Tickets are available online at fortgriffinfandangle.com, at the Fandangle ticket office, or at the gate on show nights at the Prairie Theater.
