Local entries place at WHC

Several Shackelford County residents placed in events last month at the Western Heritage Classic in Abilene. The festival, which featured the celebration of western life, was held May 9-13.

In the ranch rodeo, Green Land & Cattle finished fourth in the team standings with 66.5 points, placing for the third consecutive year.

The ranch rodeo pits teams of working cowboys in events such as team branding, team doctoring, team penning, wild cow milking, and bronc riding.

Albany participation needed

Organizers of the annual Ft. Griffin Fandangle parade have lined up special judges as part of the 85th anniversary celebration of the outdoor show and now are looking for both sponsors and entries to make the event a success.

This year’s parade is scheduled to roll down Main Street at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 17.

City-wide cleanup planned

The Albany Chamber of Commerce is still seeking volunteers for its annual community-wide cleanup day on Saturday, June 10

Volunteers should meet at the Depot at 8:30 a.m. Participants are asked to bring yard tools and implements such as hoes, rakes, gloves, mowers, and weedeaters.

The effort is aimed at beautifying Albany for the influx of visitors expected to attend performances of the Fort Griffin Fandangle later in the month.

Blood drive dates changed

Blood drive dates in Albany are being changed back to Thursdays, according to Lauren Spindler, Marketing and Business Development Manager at Hendrick Regional Blood Center in Abilene, with the next one set a couple of weeks later than originally planned.

The first two dates of the 2023 series were moved to Fridays, but as of June, will go back to Thursdays from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m.

Grades 3-4 results listed for elementary track meet

Students at Nancy Smith Elementary School participated in the annual track meet held Tuesday, May 23, with results kept in many of the third through sixth grade competitions.

Contests and activities for the younger students, as well as some for the older grades, were “just for fun,” with no places awarded.

Following are the results for third and fourth grades, with those for the fifth and sixth grade students to be printed over the next couple of weeks.

Third Grade

Summer school to start June 12

Although the regular school year ended last week for the summer, some Albany ISD students will be returning for three weeks of summer school starting Monday, June 12.

Summer school classes will be held from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon on Monday through Friday, ending on Friday, June 23. Both campuses will follow the same schedule.

Parents of students who are required to attend should have been notified already, according to school officials. However, anyone who has questions can contact either the elementary or secondary offices for assistance.

Leech earns 4-H award

Five Shackelford County 4-Hers will be competing for top places Monday-Thursday, June 5-8 at the State 4-H Roundup in College Station, while a sixth will be receiving a significant scholarship.

Leddie Leech has been named a recipient of a $10,000 grant from the Texas 4-H Foundation Opportunity Scholarship Program. The scholarship is spread over eight semesters.

Moran scholarships listed

Six Moran High School seniors received scholarships last week at the school’s annual award banquet or graduation.

On Tuesday, May 23, Emily Murk received the $2,500 Guy and Charlotte McCain Scholarship. Also, Joanna Sullivan Memorial Scholarships were awarded to Tyler Waddell and Samantha Hinkle ($500 each), and Daphne Crews, Chloe Hendricks, and Alyssa Allred ($250).

Shenandoah to perform at Aztec June 10

About 100 tickets remain for the Albany Live concert on Saturday, June 10 at the Aztec Theater featuring the band Shenandoah, which is on a 35th anniversary tour.

Tickets are available online at www.albanylive.org. Just a handful of reserved seats were available on Monday for $100 each, while 90 general admission tickets at $75 each were available.

As with all Albany Live productions, a $50 VIP add-on is available for ticket holders that entitles ticket holders to enjoy food and drink after the performance to meet the artists.
