Abilene Teachers FCU is bringing financial literacy education to over 15,820 students and residents in several Texas counties, including students at Albany schools in Shackelford County.

Students at 104 schools and the surrounding communities have free access to Banzai, an award-winning online program and content library that allows users to practice real-world finance from the safety of their homes or classrooms using any internet-enabled device.

At a time when a solid foundation of practical financial knowledge is critical, these resources will make a huge impact on users.

Ryan Mark was named to the Dean’s List for the 2022 fall semester at Austin College. His GPA for the term is within the top 20 percent for all undergraduate students at Austin College.

Mark, a 2022 honor graduate of Albany High School, is the son of Amy and Jeff Price.

Last Saturday’s fair-weather family festival at the Old Jail Art Center seemed to trigger a deluge of parents with their children in tow to enjoy the first nice day after almost a week of being “held captive” indoors.

OJAC staff members are hoping that the stream of visitors continues next week with plans to show the museum a little love when Hearts for Arts Week gets underway on Tuesday.

With just over a week remaining in the filing period for several local May 6 elections, only incumbents have signed up for terms on one of the six boards or councils subject to election, and so far, there are no opposed races.

Board member posts and council positions are subject to election by the public for both Albany and Moran school boards and city councils, along with the Shackelford County Hospital District and the Fort Griffin SUD.

Candidates have until Friday, Feb. 17 to have their names placed on the ballots for any of the local elections.

Grandparents Week at Nancy Smith Elementary is set for next week, Feb. 13-17, according to principal John Gallagher.

The Parent-Teachers Organization will host the annual Book Fair in the cafeteria on the same days.

The books will be set up on the stage in the cafeteria for students and grandparents to view during student lunch times. The usual assortment of books, games, posters, bookmarks, and other supplies will be available.

Albany High School seniors are offering an evening of childcare as a Project Graduation fund­raiser, 6:30-10:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Youth Center.

Cost is $30 per child for the entire evening, with a Friday night registration deadline and a limit of about 30 children.

It promises to be another who-done-it at the Whitney Saturday night with the performance of a murder-mystery dinner theater.

While the ticket deadline was Monday, organizer and writer/director Ragan Riley reported a large number of tickets were sold for the production. All proceeds from the play will benefit the Vittles by Vehicle program that feeds about 40 local senior citizens three times each week.

ResourceCare of Albany, which manages the food program, is hosting the dinner theater as a fundraiser.

Three board members were re-elected and another was voted in for the first time by the Albany chamber of Commerce last Friday.

As part of the annual membership meeting of the organization, the directors were elected to three-year terms by the members, followed by the board selecting officers for the coming year at the luncheon held at the Icehouse Restaurant.

Fans of Albany Live performances at the Aztec will have to wait until March to enjoy a show unless they already have tickets to the sold-out Charlie Robison concert on Feb. 18.

The local non-profit announced its spring series in December and have already had two sell-outs in as many months.

The series started on Jan. 14 with a sold-out return performance by Paul Cauthen, and the Robison show set for Feb. 18 sold out within a couple of weeks.

Next in the series is a concert by Sunny Sweeney, who is making her local debut on March 18.

The annual Albany Cub Scout Pinewood Derby was held Monday, Feb. 6 at the Scout Hut with Gannon Rankin taking first place overall.

A total of four Scouts from the Wolf and Bear Dens took part in the event. Scouts build cars out of a kit containing block of wood with four wheels and four nails for axles. Cars may be carved and decorated, but must meet length, width, and weight requirements. Cars are powered by gravity on a sloped track.
