Lady Bulldogs earn all-district

The Moran varsity girls basketball team had six members recognized with honors in District 13 - 1A.

Sophomore Hannah Noble received second team All-District, and sophomores Alli Scott and Emily Murk received Honorable Mention.

Senior Dariann Hawley and junior Hannah Rogers received Honorable Mention and Academic All-District.

Junior Johnnie Hise received Academic All-District. 

Moran boys varsity basketball honors have not been announced as there is a district basketball team still in the playoffs.

Last week was National FFA Week, and members of the Moran High School FFA hosted a hamburger lunch last Wednesday, Feb. 24.

The officers sent out letters inviting local farmers to the meal in appreciation for the work they do in the community. 

Moran FFA officers are Cotten Campbell – sentinel, Ellis Hise – treasurer, Aydan Moreno – secretary, Johnnie Hise – president, and Hannah Rogers – vice president.

Color photo packets of the youth basketball and Little Dribbler teams, taken by The Albany News, are ready for pickup this week at the News office

In addition, a number of packages from previous sports have not yet been claimed.

The Albany High School softball team and individual pictures are scheduled to be taken in the next couple of weeks and should be ready by the end of March.

Youth packages are priced at $20 plus tax, while the cost of school sports packages is $25 plus tax.

Athletic Boosters need volunteers

The Albany Athletic Booster Club is making plans for upcoming fundraisers during the month of March.

AABC will host the concession stand for three upcoming track meets scheduled in Albany. 

A junior high track meet is scheduled for Monday, March 8, and the district junior high track meet will be held on Saturday, March 27.

Albany will host the high school district track meet on Wednesday, March 31.

Play cast competes Wednesday

The Albany High School’s One Act Play cast and crew gave a public performance of  The Love of  Three Oranges on Monday, March 1 at the Albany High School auditorium. 

District competition was scheduled for Wednesday, March 3 at the new performing arts center in Haskell and results were not available at press time. 

Monday’s performance gave the students the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience before competing at district. 

Exhibitors place in San Antonio

Local FFA and 4-H members returned to the San Antonio Livestock Show last week to show their projects. 

Albany FFA sponsor and ag instructor Chris Beard said 17 exhibitors showed barrows Feb. 19-26 during the second week of the show.

Callan Edgar placed second with her middle weight cross in class 53 and made the sale.

Carli Edgar’s entry in the class 59 heavy weights was selected third.

Hannah Snyder won second with a cross in class 95.

Tatum Grady earned 10th place with her Hampshire. 

Drivers license waiver to end April 14

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has announced that the waiver on expiration dates for driver licenses (DLs) and identification cards (IDs) will end April 14, 2021. Customers who need to renew are urged to make an appointment soon.

The waiver, granted by Gov. Greg Abbott last March due to the pandemic, applied to DLs, commercial DLs, commercial learner permits, ID cards and election identification certificates that expired on or after March 13, 2020.

Project Grad meal sells out quickly

The Project Graduation organizers for the senior class held another successful fundraiser on Sunday, Feb. 28 at The Feed Store.

Students and parents  served a ‘To Go’ lunch featuring chicken spaghetti, salad, bread stick, and dessert for a donation.

Class parent Tisha Wilkins said the fundraiser was ‘fantastic.”

NWS local radar equipment to be upgraded

Beginning Monday, March 8, the KDYX or DYESS WSR-88D operated by NOAA’s National Weather Service in San Angelo, Texas will be down for approximately two weeks for an important upgrade. 

Technicians will refurbish and replace the pedestal, one of the most critical components of the radar, which is necessary for antenna rotation and positioning to capture data in all directions. 

The components are extremely heavy and will require the radome to be removed by crane and replaced when the work is completed.

Scholarship information due soon

Representatives of local organizations and boards that award scholarships to Albany High School graduates are asked to contact Ann Riley at the AHS office by Monday, March 22.

The office will be open  next week, but will be closed the following week for spring break and will reopen for regular hours on Monday, March 22.

Riley added that the scholarship list will be uploaded to the district’s website and distributed to local seniors by Friday, March 26 informing them of the requirements for specific scholarships.
