Local candidates pick up petitions

Two prospective county candidates had already picked up applications before press time this week and were expected to file by petition.

Incumbent Precinct 3 commissioner Lanham Martin of Moran is working to obtain the needed signatures to file for office.

Announcing his intention to file for the office of county attorney is Albany attorney Rollin Rauschl.

The incumbent, Colton Johnson, is not planning to run for reelection.

Senior luncheon planned Friday

Shackelford County senior adults 60 and up are invited to attend the Resource Center’s October senior luncheon on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Youth Center beginning at 11:15 a.m.

Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church will host the meal this month, according to program assistant Ragan Riley.

The menu is turkey, dressing, gravy, green bean casserole, cranberries, and yams, with a Thanksgiving theme.

Burn ban reinstated

A routine meeting of the Shackelford County commissioners on Tuesday morning, delayed 24 hours because of the Veterans Day holiday, saw several agenda items tabled for various reasons. 

The elected officials opted to reinstate the county-wide burn ban that had been temporarily lifted after last week’s rainfall, mainly due to high winds this week.

Early deadline set for Thanksgiving

An early deadline has been set for the Nov. 28 edition of The Albany News due to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and print schedule.

All advertising, including classified ads, and news copy must be received no later than noon on Monday, Nov. 25. 

The usual deadline for the weekly paper is Tuesday at 12:00 noon. It is being moved up a day in order to accommodate the printer’s schedule and also adjust the mailing schedule.

National Honor Society to induct 16

The Albany Chapter of the National Honor Society will induct 16 new members this Sunday.

A recognition ceremony for the new members will be held on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 3:00 p.m. at the Albany High School auditorium.

A reception in the --school library for honor society members and their families and guests will follow the ceremony.

Grandparents Week set Nov. 18-22

Grandparents Week is scheduled to take place at Nancy Smith Elementary School next Monday through Friday, Nov. 18-22.

“All grandparents are invited to attend lunch with their grandchildren,” said principal John Gallagher.

Students are encouraged to invite other relatives, neighbors, friends from church, etc. if they don’t have grandparents or if their grandparents don’t live nearby.

Good turnout tallied for election

In what may be the best turnout in recent years for a constitutional amendment election, 16 percent of Shackelford County’s 2,281 registered voters cast 372 ballots on Tuesday and during early voting, for the most part following statewide trends.

Local residents turned down Proposition 1 to allow an elected municipal judge to serve in more than one municipality by a 44% to 56% margin, less than the state’s 35% to 65% rejection.

Veterans to be honored next week

All veterans in Shackelford County are invited to join local students for Veterans Day activities next Monday, Nov. 11, at Nancy Smith Elementary School and at the Moran Independent School District. Additionally, the veterans and their spouses are invited to a special luncheon put on by the Albany Study Club next Thursday, Nov. 14.

The three Veterans Day events will honor local veterans and thank them for their service to America.

Holiday recipes still accepted

Recipes are still being accepted for the upcoming holiday recipe section, according to Albany News editor Melinda Lucas.

“I know there are lots of great cooks in Albany and Moran, and I could use some more recipes,” said Lucas. “I’d like to have something to start on by the end of this week, but I know it’s a busy time of year and everyone has a lot going on.”

Several individuals have sent a variety of contributions for the Nov. 21 tab, but more are needed.

Blood drive scheduled

A blood drive is scheduled to take place in Albany this afternoon, Nov. 7, and Hendrick Regional Blood Center (formerly Meek Blood Center) will park its bloodmobile at First Baptist Church from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. 

Blood drives in Albany have been sponsored by the Kiwanis Club for over 20 years.

The blood center depends on volunteer blood donors to supply 100 percent of the blood that is used for patient care at 17 area hospitals.
