Fugitive caught in Moran

Andy Haw-kins, who has been “on the run” since a warrant was issued for his arrest in July 2018, was apprehended Saturday in Moran, according to Shackelford County sheriff Ed Miller.

Chief deputy Johnny Freeman begun pursuit after Hawkins was spotted in Moran, and DPS trooper Chad Overton assisted.

Resisting arrest with a deadly weapon was added to Hawkins’ existing charges, which include attempted murder, assault family violence, evading arrest, interfering with emergency call, and unlawful restraint.

School board orders election

Five Albany ISD trustees met briefly Tuesday morning to formally order  the board election on May 4, 2019 and approve the election schedule.

At least one of the three seats is contested, with the filing period ending Feb. 15.

MISD celebrates Valentine’s

Liz Walls’ art classes sold, created, and delivered “kisses” for Valentine’s Day.

“This is an annual fundraiser that we do with the seventh and 11th grade art classes to make money for supplies,” said Walls.

Elementary classes will have Valentine’s parties today (Thursday).

Friday, Feb. 15 is the end of the fourth grading period.

Moran ISD will have classes on Presidents Day, Feb. 18. 

The next scheduled holiday is spring break, March 11-15.

Old Jail honors its members

Visitors at the Old Jail Art Center next week will have a chance to join museum patrons across the country in showing some love for artwork by placing a paper heart next to one of their favorite exhibits, and staff members are showing their love for museum members all month long.

OJAC Vimeo Channel features oral history

For several months, visitors to the Old Jail Art Center in Albany have been able to watch recorded interviews of several Shackelford County residents as part of SPOKEN: Ardon B. Judd Jr. Oral History Project, as well as shorter film clips of each interview.

Starting this month, the material is readily available to anyone, anywhere, who has internet access.

Lady Lions get softball underway

The Lady Lion softball team will host Jim Ned on Thursday for the season-opening scrimmage. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. at the city park.

The season opener will also be at home, with Albany hosting Breckenridge on Tuesday, Feb. 12 also at 5:00 p.m.

The girls will compete in the Eastland tournament on Feb. 15 and 16.

With several members of the team still involved in the basketball playoffs, the group had its first full practice on Wednesday.

McMurry honors Albany students

Cortnee Duvall, Reyna Garcia, and Allison Beard, all of Albany have been named to McMurry University’s Fall 2018 Dean’s List. To be eligible for the Dean’s List, a student must have maintained at least a 3.5 grade point average while taking 12 or more hours.

Payton Rogers, also of Albany, has been named to the Fall 2018 Dean’s Honor Roll for McMurry. To be eligible, a student must have maintained at least a 3.5 grade point average while taking six to 11 credit hours.

Youth basketball to end, Little Dribblers start Saturday

The fifth and sixth grade boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will end their season this Saturday, Feb. 9, with games scheduled to take place in Clyde and Eula, just in time to free up the Albany practice gym for Little Dribblers.

Three teams of girls and four teams of boys from eight years to fourth grade are playing in the Albany Little Dribblers at the practice gym on nine-foot goals with games starting at 9:00 a.m. every Saturday from Feb. 9 through March 2.

Exhibitors show at Ft. Worth, San Angelo

Three Albany students showed project animals at the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Fort Worth last month, and two of those brought home ribbons. 

Two local youth also placed in the San Angelo goat show last weekend.

Gracie Price placed third with her Maine Anjou heifer, Gracie Girl 15, in Early Summer Heifer Calves on Jan. 26.

Paisley Clark took third in Medium Weight Wether Goats on Jan. 27.

Conner Clark also showed a goat at Fort Worth.

Martin named to West Tx A&M list

Elizabeth Martin has been named to the Dean’s List at West Texas A&M University for the Fall 2018 semester, according to Dr. E.W. Henderson, Dean of the College of Education and Social Sciences.

Martin, a graduate of Moran High School, is the daughter of Holly and Lanham Martin of Moran.
