Albany to host Santo Friday

The Lady Lions softball team closed out its tournament schedule last week by going 2-3 Thursday-Saturday, March 2-4 at the Clifton tournament.

Albany (8-9-1) was supposed to open District 10-2A play Tuesday against Gorman, but the Panthers forfeited because they didn’t have enough players.

Lady Lions coach Jimmy Fuentes announced a handful of schedule changes that will allow the team to take off most of next week for spring break.

Lions to host baseball tourney starting today

The Albany Lions baseball team remained undefeated last week, winning two games at the weather-shortened Bonham/Bells tournament.

The Lions (4-1) played 4A Vernon in their home opener Tuesday, March 7, losing 7-4. Details will be reported next week.

Albany hosts its varsity tournament Thursday, March 9 (today) through Saturday, March 11. The Lions are scheduled to play Eastland at 9:00 a.m. and Seymour at 3:00 p.m. today, followed by Brady at 11:00 a.m. Friday and Winters at 11:00 a.m. Saturday.

4 Lady Bulldogs earn spots on all-district basketball team

Four members of the Moran Lady Bulldogs earned places on the All-District 13-1A girls basketball team selected by vote of the district coaches.

Senior Alli Scott was named to the first team, while senior Alyssa Allred earned a spot on the second team. Seniors Emily Murk and Samantha Hinkle received honorable mention.

The team was released following the elimination of the district’s playoff qualifiers. District champion Eula was the last 13-1A team in the playoffs, falling to Hermleigh in the third round.

Albany High golfers play in 2 early tournaments

The Albany Lions boys golf team began their season with an eye on returning to state with tournaments at Abilene’s Maxwell Golf Course and Hawley’s Twisted Oaks Country Club.

The Lions make their next tournament outing Monday, March 6 at the Eula Invitational at Baird’s Shady Oaks Golf Course. The girls division, which will include Albany’s My­leigh Leveridge and Chelsy Parsons, will be played Wednesday, March 8.

Baseball varsity opens season with 2 wins

The Albany Lions baseball team had the bats going Thursday, Feb. 23, opening the season with a pair of wins at the Brady tournament.

The Lions (2-0) return to action Friday-Saturday, March 3-4 at the Bonham/Bells tournament. Albany plays Bonham at 11:30 a.m. and Mount Vernon at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, then faces Rio Vista at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Albany hosts Seymour at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 7 in its home opener.

Albany to play in Clifton tourney

The Albany Lady Lions went 3-3 in their second tournament outing of the season Friday-Saturday, Feb. 24-25, reaching the consolation finals at the San Angelo tournament.

The Lady Lions (5-6-1)play their final tournament this weekend at Clifton. The tourney features a round-robin format with teams seeded for a final game.

On Thursday, March 2 (today), Albany plays Clifton and Moody. On Friday, March 3, Albany will face Hico, Comanche, and Belton. Teams will be matched based on their records from the first five games for a game on Saturday, March 4.

Tennis players claim titles

Albany tennis players claimed titles in two draws Thursday, Feb. 23 at the Hawley Invitational.

The tournament was played at Rose Park Tennis Center in Abilene.

The Albany netters returned to Rose Park Tuesday for a three-team meet with Hawley and Abilene Christian. Results will be reported next week.

At the Hawley tournament, Sidney Russell won the girls title, while Jaci Chapman and Abi Hale won girls doubles.

The girls doubles team of Caroline Chapman and Chloe Daugherty finished third after losing in the semifinals.

Track team competes in first meet

Albany track and field athletes came away with three gold medals Thursday, Feb. 23 in varsity divisions at the Breckenridge relays meet.

Albany junior high teams competed at Breckenridge on Tuesday, Feb. 28. Results will be reported next week.

The high school teams are competing Thursday, March 2 (today) at the Bangs Invitational.

At Breckenridge, Kiana Roberson won both girls throwing events, putting the shot 36 feet, 6½ inches and hurling the discus 110-8½.

All-District Picks

Albany’s Briley Tabor and Kiana Roberson were named to the All-District 10-2A girls basketball team after a vote by district coaches.

Both were first-team selections. Tabor, a three year starter, was the lone senior on the Albany roster. Roberson, a junior, repeated after earning second-team honors last year.

Entire team picked for all- district

Every member of the Albany Lions varsity boys basketball team received mention on the All-District 10-2A team, which was released this week.

The team was selected by vote of district coaches.

“We were very well represented, having two guys get superlative awards,” Lions coach Ryder Peacock said. “I think the other coaches in our district recognized that these guys got started so late. For them to play as well as they did from the very first tipoff, that recognition means a lot.”
