Ten out of 17 Albany High students are advancing to the Region II Academic Meet on April 25-26 after placing in the top three at the District 10-2A Academic Meet in Anson last Wednesday.

Albany finished the district competition in fifth place out of seven schools, primarily because of the low participation numbers.

Four Albany middle school students competed in competition sponsored by the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association (TMSCA) during the state meet in San Antonio last weekend, with two of them placing in the top 20 in three categories.

Sixth grader Tanner Howe was second in science, seventh in number sense, and 11th in math.

Fellow sixth grader Travis Hill was 17th in science, 13th in number sense, and 18th in math.

Albany police are investigating multiple incidents involving counterfeit cash passed at local businesses, including Prairie Star, a donut shop, and potentially Allsup’s. The incidents, which occurred on May 14, involved at least four individuals suspected of using fake $100 and $50 bills.

New postmaster named for Shackelford County

Amy Boyett Price has been named postmaster for Shackelford County and now oversees operations at both the Albany and Moran post offices.

Price, who has worked at the Albany office for the past six years and has ten years of experience with the postal service, officially learned of her new role following an interview held Tuesday, March 11. She received the offer that same afternoon.

Sandi Conway was recently honored for 25 years of dedicated service to the Albany Lions Club, receiving a surprise celebration in recognition of her contributions.

“I never expected anything like this,” Conway said. “The Lions Club is very important to me, and it has been for a long time.”

Fourth-grade students from Nancy Smith Elementary visited Frontier Texas on Friday, March 21, as part of their study of Texas history. The field trip coincided with the museum’s grand reopening following a year-long renovation and expansion project.

FFA, 4-H close out busy stock show stretch

Albany FFA and Shackelford County 4-H are in the final stretch of the winter stock show season with several appearing at both the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and Rodeo Austin with three locals making sales.

In Wave 1 of the barrow show at Houston, Crew Spencer placed third with a spot and made the sale. Creed Spencer exhibited a Poland China.

Spring turkey season opens this Saturday

Hunters in Shackelford County can look forward to a better than average spring turkey season.

The spring season for the north zone, where Shackelford County falls, starts this weekend on March 29, and the outlook is pretty bright, according to local game warden Jacob Mort.

“The numbers look really good compared to the past few years,” Mort said. “I’m seeing a lot more birds, and I think everyone can expect a good spring.”

There was a youth-only season March 22-23, but Mort didn’t see any hunters out and about.

Moran ISD hit the ground running this week in its return from spring break, startng with its Scholastic Book Fair, which concludes Thursday, March 27 (today).

The book fair included a family night on Tuesday, March 25.

On Tuesday and Thursday, Moran had students entered in the District 13-1A UIL Academic meet at Eula. Ellis Hise was in Ready Writing and Mathematics with Zeke Henson in Spelling and Social Studies.
