The annual field day for Nancy Smith Elementary School preschool through sixth grade students returns this year and is set for Monday, May 24 at the City Park.
Students will begin being bused to the park at 9:00 a.m. with events starting afterward, according to NSES administrative assistant Stephanie Gleitz.
Events for the students will include sack races, hurdles, tug-of-war, water kickball, and water relay.

The Albany Study Club will host a Quilt Show at the Whitney Theatre during the Fort Griffin Fandangle, June 18, 19, 25, and 26.
The show is free to the public and will be open from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.
To submit a quilt or handmade piece for the show, exhibitors can leave their project in a plastic bag with a completed information card at the Shackelford County Library.
The club also will be selling raffle tickets for a quilt made by Sandi Conway and quilted by Amy Folsom.
Albany baseball and softball team pictures that were cancelled last week due to the weather are currently being rescheduled by The Albany News.
Coach pitch teams will be taken on Saturday, May 15, and times will be set soon for girls softball.
T-ball and Little League packets are available now.

Shackelford County ResouceCare’s 17th annual spring health fair will take place at the Albany Bank Park on Friday, May 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
ResourceCare program director Mindy Ary said they expect around 15 agencies to attend the health fair for Albany and Moran elementary students.
“We will have face painting, snow cones, popcorn, and booth games throughout the morning,” said Ary. “The Albany Fire Department is also providing a bounce house.”

Albany High School seniors will be very busy during the next three weeks, with several activities planned during the time leading up to graduation.
Pictures should have already been turned in to class parent Tisha Wilkins for the senior slide show, including one baby picture, one elementary or junior high photo, and one senior picture from each senior.
“If for some reason they have not yet been turned in, they need to be given to me as soon as possible,” said Wilkins.

Academic excellence will be recognized at the Albany High School Academic Banquet sponsored by Albany ISD, the Feed Store, and the AJSHA Academic Booster Club on Monday, May 10 at 7:00 p.m., with a theme of “Be the Change You Wish to See in the World.”
The annual banquet is held in the main gym in honor of students who displayed outstanding scholarly achievement during the school year.
A chicken fried chicken dinner will be served, according to Feed Store director Tisha Wilkins.

High school graduation is three weeks away, and seniors and their parents are making plans for the celebration, including the traditional Project Graduation party.
Project Graduation is an all-night drug-free and alcohol-free party following commencement exercises and has been an annual tradition in Albany since 1988.
The project was started by the Albany Drug and Alcohol Task Force, and several people, especially Ann Jones, were instrumental in organizing the local event.

Educators at Albany ISD are being provided snacks, meals, and gifts during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 3-7, courtesy of the Albany Parent Teacher Organization, parents of local students, Prairie Star, the Albany Masonic Lodge, and local businesses.
PTO organizer Malarie Sutton said the special treats were small tokens of appreciation for all that AISD employees do for children in the district.
The Masons hosted a breakfast for school district employees on Wednesday, May 5 at the First Christian Church.

The Albany Independent School District band program will hold a spring band concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18 at the Bank Park.
The concert will feature musicians from the sixth grade through high school.
The sixth grade band will perform contest pieces “The Buglers” and “Star Wars,” according to band director Will Vaughan.
“We may possibly perform one more song depending on how much we can get done around testing,” Vaughan said.

In the midst of the hustle and bustle of spring activities, contests, and end of year events, the annual prom is a chance for local high school students to dress their best and show off their dance moves.
“A Black Tie Affair” is the theme of this year’s Albany High School prom and will be held from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 15 at the Whitney Theatre.
The event is sponsored by the junior class and is free to all juniors and seniors.
