Signup is underway for Little Dribblers basketball and local boys and girls from eight years old through fourth grade are invited to join.
“Players must be at least eight years of age on Jan. 1,” said organizer Clint Chapman.
Parents need to complete, sign, and return the registration form along with the $30 entry fee to either the Nancy Smith Elementary School office or to Chapman by Wednesday, Jan. 23.
General hunting season for white-tailed deer ended last weekend, but antlerless deer and spikes can be harvested until Jan. 20, and a special Youth-Only Season also extends through that same weekend.
Local hunters who harvest more venison than they intend to use are being encouraged to donate their extra bounty to Hunters for the Hungry, with distribution being handled locally through the Albany Masonic Lodge.
Locally, field-dressed deer can be dropped off at Rocker B Taxidermy, along with the required $40 processing fee, during regular business hours.
Trustees for the Moran Independent School District added a student holiday to the 2019 spring semester during their regular board meeting on Dec. 17.
Because of the change, MISD will not have classes on Friday, Feb. 1.
The update to the MISD calendar was done in response to the Shackelford County Youth and Livestock Association changing the day of the local stock show from Jan. 24-26 to Jan. 31 through Feb. 2.
Local residents who want to run for city council, hospital district, or school board positions in the Saturday, May 4 election may begin filing the required paperwork on Wednesday, Jan. 16.
Filing closes a month later on Friday, Feb. 15 at 5:00 p.m. There is no filing fee.
Albany City Council
The position of mayor and two Albany city council seats, each for a two-year term, are up for election. Applications will be available at City Hall from city secretary Becky Wiloth.
The Albany Chamber of Commerce’s annual membership meeting, normally scheduled on the first Friday of February, is being delayed until the second week because of a conflict with the county stock show.
Chamber manager Mary Beth Jones said this week that the traditional membership session will take place at the Beehive Restaurant on Friday, Feb. 8 immediately after the noon luncheon.
Several of the current directors have asked to be replaced and there are others whose terms are expiring this year, said Jones.
Albany High senior Jillian Guinn and Moran senior Curry Pendleton were recently named as two of the Lee’s Legion Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution 2019 DAR Good Citizen award winners.
The two Shackelford County students, along with Kelton Wylie from Breckenridge and Clint Petree from Cisco were recognized at a ceremony at the Lord’s Old Time Gospel Church in Breckenridge on Wednesday, Jan. 9.

“We are only at $12,950 this week after today’s mail,” said SCYLA treasurer Molly Cauble on Monday, Jan. 7.
A minimum of $18,000 is typically required to fund the show, and the directors had hoped to have that amount raised by Jan. 5 so they could concentrate their efforts on final preparations.

A lack of any measurable snow in Albany didn’t prevent two dozen local youth group members and leaders from enjoying winter sports over the Christmas break.
Seven inches of new snow fell on top of a three-foot deep base at Crested Butte Mountain in Colorado last week, and 21 local high school and junior high students spent the first week in January snow skiing during the day and learning more about God through special programs and small group Bible studies in the evenings.
During September, on the late Robert Nail’s birth date, and on through the Albany High School homecoming week in October, support was sought during the annual fundraising drive for “Dollars for Bob’s Scholarships.”
However, the fundraising effort continues all through the year, and members of the Albany Ex-Students Association are asking Albany graduates and others to rememeber the fund in their end-of-year giving.
