Tourney waiting list set up

Even though the Albany Golf Club’s annual Labor Day tournament has had a full field for more than a week, organizers are taking names for a waiting list in case any of the registered entries are forced to withdraw.

Albany Golf Club president Randy Walker said “several” names have been placed on the waiting list in the past week.

The two-person scramble is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 3-4 at Albany Golf Course.

The field will consist of 44 teams – 22 in the morning flight and 22 in the afternoon flight.

Lions match up with strong Coleman team

The Albany Lions held their own in their first scrimmage of the 2022 football season, matching and sometimes surpassing the Coleman Bluecats on Friday, Aug. 12 at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The Lions make their second preseason outing Thursday, Aug. 18 (tonight) against the Early Longhorns, again at Nail Stadium, starting at 6:00 p.m.

Against Coleman, Albany matched the Bluecats with one touchdown as each team scored in the second segment with starters on the field.

Girls get sweep over Olney on Tuesday

The Albany Lady Lions volleyball team upped its record to 5-3 Tuesday, Aug. 16 with a sweep of Olney. Albany won on its home floor, defeating the Lady Cubs 25-14, 25-12, 25-15.

The local girls will have a rematch with Eastland on Friday, starting with the varsity in the AHS gym at 4:00 p.m.

Lady Bulldogs to play in Benjamin tourney today

The Moran Lady Bulldogs volleyball team hit the court Saturday, Aug. 6 for a scrimmage at Munday.

The Lady Bulldogs opened the season Tuesday, Aug. 9 at Rotan and will wrap up the first week of matches Thursday, Aug. 11 at the Benjamin tournament.

Details on Tuesday’s match will be reported next week.

Bulldogs to scrimmage today

The Moran Bulldogs football team joined other teams across the state in donning pads as the second week of preseason practice got under way.

The Bulldogs will get their first outing Thursday, Aug. 11 (tonight) in a scrimmage at Trent.

“It’ll be us, Trent, and Santa Anna in a three-way scrimmage,” Bulldogs coach John Hughes said. “We’ll work offense and defense, then take a break. When we come back, we’ll reverse the roles.”

MISD school year gets underway this week

Moran ISD got a jump on many school districts in the state by starting classes on Monday, Aug. 8.

Moran started earlier than most districts because it is employing a four-day class week for this year.

Moran principal Jo Hise said the opening day of school avoided any major issues.

“I think it went fairly well,” Hise said. “We even enrolled a couple more kids, and that’s always a big plus. Everybody seemed excited and ready to go.”

Hebel makes change to find her fit on SHSU team

The biggest thing Elia Hebel learned during her freshman year of college was how to find the right place for herself.

That involved changing schools and positions, but the former Albany softball standout feels she found her spot.

Golf tourney already filled

More than three weeks before the event, the Albany Golf Club’s annual Labor Day tournament has a full field, club president Randy Walker announced on Tuesday.

Walker said a waiting list for alternate entries will be compiled in case any teams withdraw.

Lady Lions to host tournament this week

The Albany Lady Lions volleyball team looked to up their game as the regular season got underway this week.

The Lady Lions opened the season Tuesday, Aug. 9 at home against Breckenridge, winning the first match but eventually losing a very close game. Details will be reported next week.

Albany will wrap up the week by hosting its annual Summer Slam tournament. The varsity portion begins Thursday, Aug. 11 (today), with varsity pool matches. After junior varsity teams play Friday, Aug. 12, varsity teams return for bracket play on Saturday, Aug. 13.

Lions face Coleman in first scrimmage

The Albany Lions football team got its first taste of contact this week and will close out the second week of preseason with its first taste of competition.

The Lions will scrimmage the Coleman Bluecats Friday, Aug. 12 at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

Action is scheduled to get underway at 6:00 p.m. with the junior varsity. The varsity will follow.

“We’re going to go pretty fast,” Lion head coach Denney Faith said. “It will give us a chance to evaluate kids at positions and try to get out without any injuries.”
