Sports banquet planned May 11

The 2021 All-Sports Banquet, which honors local students for their participation in high school athletic events, has been set for Tuesday, May 11 at the Albany High School gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.

The serving line will begin at 7:00 p.m., according to Athletic Booster Club secretary Tisha Wilkins.

High school athletes will be recognized, and coaches will announce winners of various awards, including several special memorial awards.

Players earn post-season recognition

Four Albany basketball players have been recognized with selection to the Class 2A All-Big Country Basketball team.

Senior Barrett Beal was unanimously picked for the first team, while sophomore Cole Chapman received the Sixth Man Award for the team.

Both Beal and Chapman also were selected as Honorable Mention for the All-Big Country Super Team, which includes players from all classifications.

Freshman Adam Hill and sophomore Coy ­Lefevre both received Honorable Mention for the Class 2A team.

AHS jumpers to compete at state

Two Albany tracksters will compete in jumping events at the State Track Meet on Friday at the Mike Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

Sophomore Cole Chapman won the high jump Region II Track Meet, going 6-02 on his last attempt. Junior Luke Ivy finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 43-10.25, also on his final attempt.

Chapman will jump at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, while Ivy will compete at 1:00 p.m.

Both events are part of Session 3, which includes the field events for Class 2A and 5A.

Lions to face Coleman at bi-district

The Lion baseball team ended the regular season undefeated, advancing into the playoffs as the winner of District 8-2A.

Albany (16-3-1, 10-0) will face the Coleman Bluecats (12-10, 8-5) in the bi-district series that starts Friday and continues on Saturday.

Game 1 is set for Glen Rose at 6:30 p.m. Friday, with the Lions serving as the home team. Ticket prices are set at $5 for adults and $3 for students.

MHS hurdler to compete at state

Moran sophomore athlete Alli Scott punched her ticket to the state meet after taking first place in the 100 meter hurdles at the Region 2 1A track meet at Angelo State University on April 23-24.

She will compete at the state track meet in Austin on Saturday, May 8.

Scott also tied for sixth place with Johnnie Hise in the high jump and earned 10th place in the long jump.

In addition to the high jump, Hise competed in the 800 meter run, placing 15th. 

Lions end regular schedule with 10-0 mark

The Lion baseball team ended the regular season with a perfect 10-0 district sweep after a win over Hawley on Tuesday, clinching the undisputed District 8-2A championship title and advancing into the playoffs.

The Lions face the fourth place team from District 7-2A in bi-district action at the end of next week. The opponent and game details for the first round had not been determined at press time.

Albany closed the regular season with a 7-2 win in Hawley on Tuesday. Details will be reported next week.

Golfers compete at regional

A four-member team of underclassmen, including three freshmen and one sophomore, finished in the top half of all Region 2 golf teams, finishing eighth out of 16 teams at the regional golf tournament held last Wednesday and Thursday in Ferris.

London Fuentes, Ayden Balliew, Houston Heatly, and Lute Wheeler recorded a two-day total of 743.

Sarah Cotter tops regional tennis meet, qualifies for state tourney

Albany High School junior Sarah Cotter claimed a spot at the state tennis tournament by blazing her way through the regional meet earlier this week, held at the Richland Tennis Center in North Richland Hills.

Details from the April 26-27 meet were not available at press time on Tuesday evening, but several other AHS players also played well, with the boys doubles and mixed doubles teams advancing to Round 2, and the girls doubles team to Round 3 along with Albany’s other girls singles player.

2 AHS jumpers advance to state

Several Albany athletes placed at the Region II Track and Field Meet last week in Springtown, with two Lions advancing to the state meet in jumping events.

Sophomore Cole Chapman won the boys high jump, clearing 6-02 on his final attempt to move from fourth to first place.

Junior Luke Ivy will also be competing in Austin at the state meet in the triple jump with a distance of 43-10.25.

Best of 3 series to start Thursday

The Lady Lion softball team ended the regular season on Tuesday with a 11-6 loss to the Cisco Lady Loboes, sending Albany into the playoffs as the runner-up in the 2A bracket for Region I.

The two teams were tied in the standings going into the bout at the local ballpark, with the winner advancing in the top spot in the playoffs.

The Lady Lions will face the Anson Lady Tigers, the third place team from District 7-2A, in a best-of-three series if field conditions and weather permits.
