Albany’s varsity Lady Lions opened District 10-2A action on Dec. 21 with a loss in Stamford, followed by dropping a non-district game in Aspermont last Saturday, Dec. 28.
The girls hosted the Haskell Maidens on Tuesday, Dec. 31, but results were not available due to an early deadline for the News.
The district race will continue with a road game on Friday against Abilene TLCA. The girls will follow the JV boys at approximately 6:15 p.m. Albany will host Cisco on Jan. 7.

With his personal and family history, it’s not too big of a surprise Albany native Brooks Neece found a way to be involved in college football.
Neece, a 2022 Albany graduate and one of four brothers to play for Lions coach Denney Faith, caught on as a student video assistant with the A&M football program this season, culminating in a trip to the Las Vegas Bowl.

The varsity Lions basketball team opened the district race with a win over Stamford at the start of the Christmas break, then came back last weekend to compete in the Windthorst tournament on Dec. 27 and 28.
The Lions hosted Haskell on Tuesday as the District 10-2A season continues, however, results were not available due to an early deadline.
More than 200 Nancy Smith Elementary School students participated Wednesday, Dec. 11, in the school’s inaugural Jingle Run with dozens of turkeys handed out to families in the community.
“I’d say we had about 95 percent of the school there,” said NSES PE teacher Makinzie Tomascik, who organized the event with fellow PE teacher Ashlyn Bevel.” The kids had a lot of fun doing it and the parents showed up and were supportive. A lot of kids and families got to take a turkey home.”
The Albany Lady Lions made their first appearance in District 10-2A basketball competition last week, dropping a home game to Hawley in their only action.
The Lady Lions had the district bye Tuesday, Dec. 17, and return to action at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21. The game was pushed back from Friday, Dec. 20 because of Stamford’s participation in the Class 2A Division I state championship football game.
The Albany Lions boys basketball team put in a busy first week of its season, with five games, going 4-1.

Albany opened its season Tuesday, Dec. 10, with a 43-40 loss at Coleman. The Lions then spent Thursday-Saturday, Dec. 12-14 at the Lingleville tournament, beating Newcastle 74-25, Bluff Dale 60-25, Strawn 74-32, and Richland Springs 54-25.
