Albany loses to Itasca at area playoff

For the second year in a row, the Albany Lions were eliminated from the Class 2A boys basketball playoffs in the area round, falling 49-42 to Itasca on Friday, Feb. 24, at Dublin.

The Lions advanced with a 54-53 overtime victory against Seymour in bi-district, played Tuesday, Feb. 21 at Graham.

Albany finished the season 14-6 after tying Cisco for second place in District 10-2A despite starting the season six weeks late because of football.

Little Dribblers continue action

Albany’s Little Dribblers program completed its second week of play Saturday, Feb. 18 after starting the season Saturday, Feb. 11.

Thenext games start at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 at both Albany High School gyms.

Lions open with scrimmage

The Albany Lions baseball team took advantage of nice weather Monday, Feb. 20 to get in a scrimmage against Merkel in advance of the opening games later this week.

The Lions were scheduled to face Mason at 11:30 a.m. and Brady at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23 (today), at the Brady tournament.

Albany will also host its annual JV tournament Thursday-Saturday. The five-team event will give each team three games. The Albany JV will begin play at 12:20 p.m. today.

The Albany Lions and Lady Lions track and field teams start their season Thursday, Feb. 23 (today) at the Breckenridge relay meet with several athletes involved in other activities.

Tennis team gets court action

The Albany Lions tennis team got their season underway Thursday, Feb. 16, with a four-team round-robin at Abilene’s Rose Park Tennis Center.

Albany returned to Rose Park Thursday, Feb. 23 (today) for the Hawley Invitational.

Coach M.J. Reneau said last week’s event against opponents from Abilene Christian, Clyde, and San Angelo was a good way to start despite not having her full lineup. Luke Marshall, a state qualifier in boys singles last year, and Ella Webb, a regional doubles qualifier, did not compete.

Photos taken of fifth and sixth grade youth basketball teams and individuals are ready for pickup at The Albany News office.

Little Dribblers pictures were taken last Saturday, and those packages will be available about mid-March.

Little League deadline nears

Sign up deadline for Albany Little League is this Friday, Feb. 24, according to league organizer Paul Hamilton.

Registration forms are available at Nancy Smith Elementary School and Albany Junior/Senior High. Online registration is available at albanytxll.com.

Albany Little League is open to boys and girls to play at the T-ball, Coach Pitch, Minor, Major, Intermediate and Junior levels.

Registration fees are $50 for T-ball and Coach Pitch, $75 for Major and Minor, and $85 for Intermediate and Junior.

Lady Lions open with 4-4 tie in Eastland

The Albany Lady Lions got the 2023 softball season underway last week, going 2-4-1 in the first seven games.

None of the games lasted beyond five innings.

The Lady Lions make their second tournament outing of the season this weekend at San Angelo. On Friday, Feb. 25, Albany will play pool games against Bangs, Forsan, and Midland Christian. Bracket play will be held Saturday, Feb. 26.

Lions win bi-district crown in overtime

A free throw by Adam Hill in the last seconds of overtime gave Albany the win in a bi-district game Tuesday that was a battle from the beginning.

Tied up at the end of regulation time because of a Seymour free throw, the Lions eventually defeated the Panthers 54-53 in a nail-biter. Details will be reported next week.

Moran basketball season ends

The Moran Lady Bulldogs wrapped up the girls basketball season Tuesday, Feb. 7, falling just short in a comeback bid at Baird.

Meanwhile, the Moran boys basketball team entered its final game of the season this week.

The Moran boys closed the season Tuesday, Feb. 14 at home against Rising Star. Senior night activities were held before the game.

At Baird, the Lady Bulldogs lost 37-31 despite a big comeback in the second half.
