Playoff plans start with pep rally

The Albany Athletic Booster Club is in playoff mode with activities planned for each week the Albany Lions advance in the Class 2A Division II football playoffs.

The Lions play the Eldorado Eagles at 7:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in a bi-district game at the Mustang Bowl in Sweetwater.

Spirit Drum

Beating of the spirit drum will begin Thursday, Nov. 10 (tonight) in advance of the Lions’ bi-district game.

Scouts collect unserviceable flags

Albany’s Cub Scout Pack 255 Wolf Den is moving right along with its project to retire unserviceable American flags.

Den leader Tiffany Waddell said about 20 flags have been collected so far.

“We’ve actually received quite a few flags,” Waddell said. “I have a 13-gallon trashbag full and a boxful.”

Albany to face Eldorado in first round

The Albany Lions wrapped up the District 6-2A Division II championship Thursday, Nov. 3 by beating Abilene Texas Leadership Charter Academy 67-0 on Senior Night at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The Lions (8-2 overall, 5-0 district) open the playoffs at 7:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11 against Eldorado in a Class 2A Division II bi-district game at Sweetwater’s Mustang Bowl. The Lions enter the postseason ranked No. 6 in the state by Dave Campbell’s Texas football magazine, moving up a spot in the final poll.

Lady Lions lose at bi-district

The Albany Lady Lions saw a promising season come to an unexpectedly early end last week with a loss to Sonora in the first round of the Class 2A volleyball playoffs.

Albany finished the season with a 24-8 record and a share of the District 6-2A championship. Postseason hopes were dashed with an 18-25, 22-25, 23-25 loss to the Lady Broncos on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at San Angelo Lake View.

Girls basketball underway

Basketball season tips off for Albany high school and junior high teams over the next few days, although the varsity boys schedule is once again on hold pending the football team’s playoff run.

Action began Tuesday, Nov. 8, with the Lady Lions scrimmaging Coleman at home. The girls open the season at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 against Paint Creek at home.

Junior high girls and boys begin play Monday, Nov. 14 against Abilene Christian.

The JV boys are scheduled to open their season Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Abilene TLC tournament.

Flag football photos ready for pickup

Photo packages of flag football players that were ordered last month are now available for pickup at The Albany News, open Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Packages that weren’t paid or couldn’t be charged to an existing account can still be purchased and ordered.

Cubs finish with big wins

The Albany Junior High Cubs closed out their football season Thursday, Nov. 3 with a pair of shutout victories over Abilene Texas Leadership Charter Academy at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The seventh grade Cubs finished off a 9-0 campaign with a 46-0 victory. The eighth grade won 31-0 to end the season at 6-2-1.

Bennett Neece, Clay Chapman, and Jakobi Roberson each scored two touchdowns as the Cubs scored six different ways.

Lady Bulldogs earn historic bi-district title

The Moran Lady Bulldogs made history last week before bowing out of the Class 1A volleyball playoffs.

Moran defeated Three Way 25-18, 25-18, 25-22 on Tuesday, Nov. 1 in a bi-district match at Dublin. It was the first bi-district title  in program history and the first playoff win for the school in any team sport since a 70-46 bi-district football victory over Valera Panther Creek in 2017.

Murk, Henderson honored

Moran made a handful of special presentations Thursday, Oct. 27 at its final home football game of the season.

In addition to senior Tyler Waddell being recognized with Senior Night ceremonies, senior Emily Murk was named Football Sweetheart, and junior Zech Henderson was named Pep Squad Beau.

The pair was recognized at halftime of the Bulldogs’ game against Paint Rock.

“The Football Sweetheart was voted on by all the football boys, and the Pep Squad Beau was voted on by the cheerleaders,” Moran principal Jo Hise said.

Veterans Day program, Thanksgiving meal set

Moran ISD will conduct its Veterans Day program at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10 (today) at the school gymnasium.

Members of American Legion Post 423 in Cross Plains will make a flag presentation, students from sixth grade, kindergarten and Pre-K will sing, and Moran graduate Jeff Martin will perform as the school recognizes veterans from the community.

Thanksgiving Meal

Moran will serve its Thanksgiving meal Wednesday, Nov. 16.

The event is open to all community members.
