The Albany Junior Senior Prom is only two days away, but according to Tammy McBee with the local prom dress ministry, there is still time for participants to set up an appointment to try to find that perfect gown, suit, shoes, or tie.

“We open up the clothing ministry by appointment only,” McBee said. “We like to make sure that no one else is in the church while the girl is trying on gowns. We’ve met with people as early as 7:00 in the morning and as late as 9:00 at night.”

Six young adults from Albany spent spring break almost halfway around the world on a Christian mission trip to Uganda.

Current Albany High sophomore Tana Thompson joined AHS alumni Michael Cotter, Rachel Hill, Michala Huckabay, Autumn Owen, and Hunter Owen.

The local young adults were part of a 21-member Live Missions team led by former Albany youth minister Thomas Aly.

The group left Texas on Tuesday, March 5 and returned late on Friday, March 15.

The Lion baseball team picked up a pair of wins last Friday while hosting Hamlin and Wellington in a round robin, and the JV Lions also earned a win over Hamlin during a full day of baseball.

The varsity hosted Knox City on Tuesday in the final pre-district warm-up game, beating the Greyhounds 15-2. Details of the game will be reported next week.

The Lions will open District 8-2A action in Stamford on Friday with the opening pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m. for the JV, followed by the varsity game at 7:00 p.m.

Three Albany High School golfers played in the seventh annual Tommy Terrell Invitational Golf Tournament here at the Albany Golf Course on Monday, March 18, with several other area schools bringing teams and medalists for the event.

Alayna Koemel shot a personal best 119 on Monday, placing fifth overall.

In the boys division, Cooper Fairchild shot a 109 on 18 holes, and Taren Farmer posted a score of 152.

The Albany track teams are hosting two track meets next week, and volunteers are needed to run the concession stands.

Monday, March 25 Albany will host a junior high meet with nine visiting schools signed up to participate.

High school tracksters from eight area schools will take to the local track and field on Thursday, March 28.

Several local youth took show steers to Houston over spring break, and one of them, Albany eighth grader Gracie Price, placed high enough to earn a spot in the prestigious sale.

Price took sixth in class 1 light weight Shorthorn at the Junior Market Steer Show.

Other steer exhibitors at Houston this year included JT Holland, Hattie Jo Braly, Kenzie Neve, and Cade Neve.

Also selling market animals in the Houston sale this year were several local youth with qualified pigs, including Connor Smith’s Champion Poland China barrow.

Lindsey Lucas, a 2018 graduate of Albany High School, is continuing her softball career at Hardin-Simmons University and is hoping she will have a chance to play overseas this summer. 

Lucas, who has played softball since she was six years old, was a part of the Albany Lady Lion team that went to State in 2018. 

She currently has been invited to play softball in Italy with her HSU teammates this summer, if she can raise enough money to pay for her trip.

Tommy and Karen Noble of Albany are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Kallie, to Jack Griffin, son of Kevin and Terri Griffin of Danville, California. 

Kallie, an Albany High School graduate, earned bachelor’s degrees in psychology and sociology and a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy. She is currently employed as a flight attendant for United Airlines and lives in San Francisco, California. 

Andrea Danette Pharris and Brandon Scott C.C. Burnett were united in marriage on Sunday March 3, 2019 at 3:33 p.m. at Plantation on the Bay in Beach City, Texas. 

The bride is the daughter of Randy Edward Pharris and Janice Michelle Carr. The groom is the son of Pastor Jay and Debbie Burnett. The bride was given in marriage by her father.

Over 180 guests attended the beautiful outdoor ceremony officiated by the groom’s father. 

Newt Koemel, a 2016 Albany High graduate and a current alternate member of the Texas Tech Meat Judging Team, placed among the top individuals at the Houston Livestock Show competition this month.

Koemel was 13th overall high individual in the B alternate division, eighth high in overall beef, and fourth in beef judging.

“I like judging beef more than pork or lamb, and I had a good day at Houston,” said Koemel. “I appreciate being able to represent the Texas Tech meat team.”
