Lady Lions pick up 3 wins in tourney

The Lady Lions were busy last week at the Winters Tournament, winning three games out of five and improving to 8-3 for the season.

The team was open this week as they prepare for tournament action in Breckenridge on Friday and Saturday. The varsity will play Dublin at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, then will start bracket play that afternoon at 4:00 p.m.. Bracket games will continue on Saturday.

Boys varsity struggles as season gets underway

The Lion varsity basketball team took the floor for the first time last week, falling to Munday in their opener.

The team hosted Early on Tuesday, coming back from an early deficit to play a close game against the 3A Longhorns but eventually losing 48-41.

Cubs sweep games against Hawley

The Albany Cubs won all three games against the visiting Hawley junior high teams on Monday.

The Cubs will travel to Roscoe on Monday, Dec. 16 for the last set of games before the holiday break. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.

The boys will return to the court on Jan. 9 in Cross Plains.

The 8A team beat Hawley 41-24 on Monday.

“This was a good win for us,” coach David Fairchild said. “We still have some things we have to shore up, but the boys showed a lot of hustle.”

Junior high girls win 3 close games

The junior high girls basketball teams played in the Breckenridge Tournament last week and were on the road Monday in Hawley.

The three local teams made a clean sweep of games in Hawley, providing excitement for fans with close scores.

The girls will host Roscoe next Monday starting at 5:30 p.m. for the final set of games prior to the Christmas break. Action will resume on Jan. 9 with the eighth grade team in Cross Plains.

MISD entries place in UIL

Moran elementary and junior high school students recently participated in the District 20 1-A University Interscholastic League elementary academic meet, which took place over several days.

Second through fifth graders are in the elementary division, and their contests took place on Thursday, Dec. 5, in Strawn.

Middle school students from sixth through eighth grade did ready writing at their home campus on Tuesday, Dec. 3, and traveled to Ranger for the rest of the contests on Thursday, Dec. 12.

Moran girls named as all-district

A member of the Lady Bulldog volleyball team was awarded one of the superlative awards, and other Moran players were  selected spots on the first  and second District 6 1-A All-District teams.

Senior November Meredith was chosen as the Outstanding Setter.

Sophomore Johnnie Hise was named to the District  6 1-A First Team.

Second Team accolades were given to junior Dariann Hawley and sophomore Hannah Rogers.

Junior Tiffany Wade, freshman Emily Murk, and junior Baylee Orsak were honorable mentions.

Ten Cate earns HSU degree

Sydney Ten Cate of Moran is graduating from Hardin Simmons University on Friday, Dec. 13 with Cum Laude honors. Her major is Criminal Justice and her minor is Psychology. 

She is the daughter of Steven and Delisa Ten Cate and the granddaughter of Bonnie Ten Cate

Ten Cate graduated from Moran High School in 2015. She was a member of the HSU track team as a long distance runner throughout her college career, earning numerous honors.

Moran holiday meal set

Students in the Moran Independent School District are finishing junior high University Interscholastic League academic contests on Thursday, Dec. 12, and then have an optional/required fifth day on Friday, Dec. 13.

Classes will release at 12:00 noon on Dec. 13.

Last week, children from Moran attended the annual puppet shows at the Old Jail Art Center in Albany, and more Christmas time activities are planned over the next few days.

Bulldogs named to all-district teams

Three Moran Bulldog football players earned places on the 1-A Division 2 District 6 All-District first team, along with eight on the second team, and one honorable mention.

In addition to district awards, sophomore Arren Hawley was named the Class A Division II Region 2 First Team punter.

First Team All-District honors were awarded to senior Jonas Sotelo and sophomores Lyric Huskey and Hawley.

Painting party, fundraiser set

Several events are planned in Moran this Saturday, Dec. 14, including the monthly children’s painting party, the annual Moran Parent Teacher Organization holiday meal, and a bimonthly fundraiser.

The monthly kids painting party will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14 at the Moran Community Center.

According to organizer Tiffany Waddell, over two dozen children have been coming to the painting parties.
