8th grade Cubs finish undefeated at 16-0

The Albany Cubs closed out the basketball season at home Monday, winning two out of the three games against Roscoe.

The eighth grade Cubs ended a perfect 16-0 season, according to coach David Fairchild, with their 46-13 win over the Plowboys. The group also went 3-0 in the local tournament last Thursday and Saturday.

Estridge currently 4th in regional powerlifting

Albany High School junior Wesley Estridge placed second at a recent powerlifting meet in Coa-homa, recording a three-lift total of 1,405 pounds.

Competing in the super heavy weight class, the 317-pound AHS athlete had a 600-pound lift in the squat, benched 340 pounds, and had a dead lift of 465 pounds.

This is Estridge’s third year to participate, lifting the last two years for Reagan County ISD. He qualified for the regional tournament last year as a sophomore.

Senior lineman tapped by Ren for “True Grit”

Tyler Beard, who played both ways as a lineman for the Albany Lions, was one of only a few Big Country football players named to Even Ren’s 2019 “True Grit” Team on the Big Country Preps online sports site recently. 

Nominations came from coaches in area schools from 1A all the way up to 6A.

Moran teams to face Eula Friday

Moran’s basketball season is winding down, and although they have lost most of their district games, all Moran coaches report that their players are improving, learning, playing better, and coming together as a team, even if the scores don’t reflect it.

The junior high teams will close out the season next Monday night when they host Strawn to games starting at 6:00 p.m.

Moran ISD plans fifth day, holiday

Next Friday, Feb. 14, is an optional/required fifth day at Moran. Monday, Feb. 17 MISD will be closed in honor of Presidents’ Day.

MISD will be closed for spring break on the week of March 9-13.

Albany girls split finale

The eighth grade Lady Cubs won the last game of the season on Monday, squeaking by Roscoe 14-13, while the seventh grade lost in Roscoe, and the combined B team tied.

The eighth grade finished the season with a 9-7 record, including 6-4 in district.

“This was an exciting game to end the season with,” coach Jamie Wilson said. “We were down by two points with 16 seconds remaining when Robin Lucas stepped up and made the game-winning three-pointer.”

The coach thanked the team for a “fantastic” season.

Youth basketball to end with tournaments

Three of Albany’s fifth and sixth grade basketball teams were on the court last Saturday, and all four of the local teams are expected to compete in the season-ending tournaments scheduled for this Saturday, Feb. 8. 

The sixth grade boys will play in Clyde’s main gym, while the fifth grade boys will be in Clyde’s auxiliary gym.

The girls’ tournaments will be in Eula. The sixth grade girls will be in the Eula High School gym, while the fifth graders will be playing at the middle school.

Softball signup to end Feb. 8

Tomorrow, Feb. 8, is the deadline to sign up for playing in the Albany Girls Softball Association this spring.

Registration fees are $45 for the first player in a family. Additional siblings can be entered in the league for $30 each. Scholarships are available. 

Players will be divided into teams based upon their age, with divisions for under-6, under-8, under-10, under-12, and under-14 (as of Jan. 1). 

Games will be played in Albany, Breckenridge, and possibly additional nearby towns.

Little League, T-ball, coach pitch signup set today

Little League signup, along with registering for T-ball and coach pitch teams, takes place tonight at the Feed Store between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m.

Little League players only need to go with their parents to the registration so that they can try on a jersey and cap for size.

It is not necessary for T-ball and coach pitch youth to attend the meeting, according to Anthony Ceder, who is helping to organize the team.

Wayne Chapman, age 74 of Albany, passed away Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, Feb. 7, at Bethel Assembly with Rev. Anthony Ceder and Clint Chapman officiating. Interment will follow in the Albany Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at Morehart Mortuary of Albany.
