Wesley Estridge, of Albany was named to the South Plains College Spring 2022 President’s List. Estridge was among more than 400 students named to the Spring 2022 President’s List.

To qualify, students must earn a GPA of 4.0 and complete a minimum of 12 credit hours.

A 2021 Albany graduate, Estridge is the son of Val and Blake Estridge of Albany.

Tristan Edgar of Albany was recently named to the South Plains College Spring 2022 Deans’ List. Edgar was among more than 660 students named for the spring semester.

Summer conditioning for all incoming seventh through 12th grade Albany student-athletes will begin Monday, June 13 and continue four days a week into July.

Summer workouts are regulated by UIL rules.

Boys summer sessions will be from 7:00 a.m. to about 8:30 a.m. each Monday through Thursday until July 21, except for July 4. Workouts will include weight lifting, agility drills, and conditioning.

Boys will also conduct afternoon skill sessions twice a week. Albany football coach Denney Faith said specific times and days have not been decided.

Students at Nancy Smith Elementary School participated in the annual track meet held all day Monday, May 23, with results kept in many of the third through sixth grade competitions.

Contests and activities for the younger students, as well as some for the older grades, were “just for fun,” with no places awarded.

Following are the results for third and fourth grades, with those for the fifth and sixth grade students to be printed over the next couple of weeks.

Moran ISD began conducting summer school classes Tuesday, June 7 for students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Summer classes will continue 8:30-11:30 a.m. each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday through June 30.

Moran superintendent Dr. John Denson said students can make up attendance requirements as well as make academic progress.

Summer Hours

Moran school offices will be open 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday through July. School offices will be closed the first week of July for the Fourth of July holiday.

The Albany Dance Theatre Company will present “Home Again” this Saturday, June 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the Albany High School auditorium.

The performance is free to the public and will include about 110 dancers from Albany and four surrounding communities.

“This year, we will feature seniors Johnnie Hise and Hannah Rogers of Moran and Abigale Wylie of Breckenridge,” said owner and co-director Betsy Black Parsons. “They will be performing together to ‘Graduation,’ which is part of the whole theme of Coming Home to Albany.”

Dozens of local scholarships were presented to members of the Albany High School Class of 2022 during commencement exercises held in the Albany High School gymnasium before a large crowd of friends and relatives last Friday, May 27.

There were well over 100 separate awards for the class of 34, with some scholarships split among more than one recipient, amounting to more than $120,000.

The awards were given by about 40 local churches, clubs, organizations, foundations and individuals.

Shackelford County Library’s annual children’s story hour will start Tuesday, June 7, and run every Tuesday morning through the end of the month.

Organizer Janna Ledbetter said the program, geared toward preschool and early elementary children, will have a theme of service to the community. Every week, a different speaker from the community, such as a police officer or fireman, will present a program for the children.

The number of positive COVID-19 tests increased to nine last week, more than doubling the number of cases reported by the two local health clinics the previous week.

County Judge Bob Skelton reported Tuesday that nine positive results out of 16 tests administered were reported to him for the week of May 23-27, an increase over the prior week when four positives were recorded and 12 tests given.

Dallas artist Colette Cope­land was busy this week putting together a multi-faceted installation in the upstairs galleries of the Old Jail Art Center, joining the staff of the local museum as they prepare for this weekend’s opening of three summer exhibitions.

The opening will start with a members’ viewing and dinner reception on Saturday, June 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The opening sound of the bugle call marking the first of four performances of the Fort Griffin Fandangle is just over two weeks away, with ticket sales and rehearsals now in full swing.

Fandangle office manager Jamie Parsons said that ticket sales for May are up from a year ago.

“We still have seats tfor each of the four performances, but anyone planning to attend should get tickets as soon as possible,” she said.
