The varsity Lady Lions won a pair of district games over the holiday break, boosting the team to 2-1 in District 10-2A action.

Albany traveled to Cisco on Tuesday, Jan. 5 as the first half of district play resumed following the Christmas break. The Lady Lions lost to the Lady Loboes 58-20 to even out their league record at 2-2.

Albany will host Anson on Friday, Jan. 8, with the varsity girls tipping off at 6:00 p.m. in the main gym. The JV girls will play in the auxiliary gym starting at 7:15 p.m.

The Lion varsity basketball team opened district play just before the Christmas break with a one-point loss to Hawley, but they chalked up a mark in the win column at the end of the break with a win over Hamlin last Saturday.

The Lions were on the road in Cisco on Tuesday, coming home with a 62-34 loss. Details of the game will be reported next week.

Albany will host the Anson Tigers on Friday, with the JV boys playing at 6:00 p.m. in the old gym, followed by the varsity game at 7:15 p.m. in the new gym.

Two Albany volleyball players have been named to the 2A All-State team by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.

Senior Alli Hill and junior Sarah Beth Cotter were both selected to the top honor following the Lady Lions’ successful season that saw the local team advance to the state semi-final for only the second time in program history.

“Alli is so versatile and can play at any position on the court,” head volleyball coach M.J. Reneau said. “She was a huge part of our success this year, earning the District MVP award.”

Both the Lion and Lady Lion varsity teams came up short last week, but both JV squads brought home victories.

All four teams were in action Tuesday, Dec. 22 in Hawley, which was the second district game for the girls and the district opener for the boys.

Results were not available due to an early deadline but will be reported in the next issue of the News on Jan. 7.

The varsity and JV girls will host Early on Tuesday. Dec. 29 starting at 2:00 p.m. with the JV girls, followed by the varsity girls at about 3:15 p.m.

The Cubs and Lady Cubs split games against Anson on Monday, with the seventh grade boys and the White team girls both earning wins.

All four squads will take a three-week break for the Christmas holidays, returning to action on Thursday, Jan. 7. The girls will be on the road playing at Abilene Christian School, while the boys will host ACS. Games at both locations will start at 5:30 p.m.

Lady Cubs Games

The girls Red team, playing at home, lost to Anson on Monday, 24-9, dropping to 3-2 for the season.

The Moran Lady Bulldogs varsity basketball team traveled to Kopperl on Tuesday, Dec. 8, which was a change in the original schedule due to COVID issues. 

The girls came up short, losing 34-32. 

Dariann Hawley was the leading scorer with 14 points, with 12 of her points coming from three-point shots. 

Hannah Noble added nine points, Hannah Rogers had five, and Emily Murk had four. 

The Lady Bulldogs hosted Blackwell on Friday, Dec. 11, losing the contest 57-24.

The varsity girls basketball team made a turn last week, picking up a pair of wins as they head into District 10-2A action.

The Lady Lions defeated both Richland Springs and Roby to improve to 4-4 for the season.

Albany opened district play at home on Tuesday, falling to Haskell 62-28. Details were not available at press time but will be reported next week.

The varsity Lions got in the win column last Friday at Roby with a 56-27 romp over the hosting Lions.

It was just the second game this season for the varsity due to an extended football playoff season.

The JV and varsity boys traveled to Coleman on Tuesday, with the varsity losing 48-60. Details will be provided next week.

The varsity will host the Abilene Hawks on Friday at 6:00 p.m.

Both teams will play at Hawley next Tuesday, Dec. 22.

The Cubs and Lady Cubs made a clean sweep of basketball games against Hamlin on Monday, with the girls winning on the road and the boys at home.

The teams will play Anson next Monday. The girls will stay at home and the boys will be in Anson. Games start at 5:30 p.m. at both locations.

The Red team girls improved to 3-1 for the season with a 27-7 win in Hamlin on Monday.
