Lions close out first half with 2 wins

The varsity Lion basketball team closed out the first half of District 10-2A action last week with a pair of wins to improve to 4-2 in league play.

Albany had a bye on Tuesday prior to starting the second half.

The Lions will host Hawley on Friday, Jan. 22, with the JV boys starting at 6:00 p.m. and the varsity following at about 7:15 p.m.

Sitting in third place at the moment, the Lions hope to avenge their 51-50 loss to the Bearcats in their district opener.

Albany girls drop district games

The Lady Lions dropped both district games on the road last week, with the second half of the district race starting on Friday in Haskell.

The varsity was open on Tuesday with a scheduled district bye.

Action resumes Friday with the Lady Lions hosting Hawley. The varsity will play at 6:00 p.m. in the new gym, while the JV will play at 7:15 p.m. in the old gym.

Albany will travel to Hamlin on Tuesday, Jan. 26 with the JV starting the four back-to-back games at 4:00 p.m. The varsity girls should play at 6:30 p.m.

2 MISD holidays scheduled

The Moran Independent School District will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18 in observance of Martin Luther King Day. 

Classes will resume at the usual times on Tuesday, Jan. 19.

MISD also will have a student holiday on Friday, Jan. 22, to enable students to attend the county stock show. 

Teachers and staff will have a comp day on Friday, Jan. 22. 

The next district holiday at MISD will be on Monday, Feb. 15 in observance of Presidents Day. 

Hawley named to post-season teams

Moran Bulldog Arren Hawley was named First Team All-Region III and Honorable Mention All-State as a punter for the 2020 football season.  

This is the second year in a row that Hawley has received the post-season honors.

Deadline nears

Parents of elementary students are reminded that registration for Little Dribblers basketball is underway, with the deadline set for Wednesday, Jan. 27.

Forms can be returned with students to school.

Girls struggle to find place in strong district

The varsity Lady Lion basketball team lost both district games last week as the District 10-2A race starts in earnest.

The girls traveled to Stamford on Tuesday, coming home with a 52-28 loss. Details will be reported next week. The loss gave the team a 6-7 overall record and 2-4 mark in district.

Albany will be on the road again on Friday in Haskell. The varsity girls and JV boys will play at 6:00 p.m., while the varsity boys and JV girls will follow at about 7:15 p.m.

Lions win last 2 games for 3-2 tally

Both the varsity and JV Lions basketball teams split games with district opponents last week, beating Anson but losing to Cisco.

Albany was on the road in Stamford Tuesday, Jan. 12, with the varsity winning an important game 65-44 to put their district record at 3-2.

Friday night’s games in Haskell this week will mark the beginning of the second half for the girls, while closing out the first half of district for the boys.

Jr. high teams back in action

The junior high basketball teams will be back in action for the first time since the Christmas break on Thursday.

The Cubs will host Abilene Christian School starting at 5:30 p.m., while the girls will play ACS in Abilene, also beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The junior high teams have been idle since Dec. 14 due to the holidays.

Games for the junior high teams will return to Monday night next week, with the boys on the road to Cisco starting at 5:30 p.m. The girls will play at home hosting Cisco also beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Youth basketball to start Saturday

Local fifth and sixth graders who signed up for local youth basketball teams have started practicing in preparation for the first tournament on Saturday, Jan. 9.

According to coach and league coordinator Clint Chapman, enough students signed up for the four teams designated for fifth and sixth grade boys and girls.

Albany will host a boys tournament starting at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, with five sixth grade teams and seven fifth grade squads each playing at least two games during the day.
