Local car show ready for 2nd try this Saturday

Organizers are backed up to the starting gate and ready for a second attempt at the 17th annual Albany Classic Car Show this Saturday, May 18 after the original April date was rained out. Earlier this week, more rain was forecast for the weekend, but those chances have mostly fizzled out, and vounteer Robert Snyder is optimistic that Saturday will dawn as the kind of day that classic car owners will enjoy getting their vehicles out into.

inner Graduating Albany senior Sidney Russell is certainly going out on top this week, competing and medaling at the UIL State Academic Meet on Tuesday and playing in the UIL State Tennis Tournament today and tomorrow. This is her second time to compete in both meets, having qualified last year as well.

Baccalaureate service set Sunday

The annual Baccalaureate Service for the Albany High School Class of 2024 is set for Sunday, May 19 at 4:00 p.m. André Raymond, former AHS science teacher, will be the guest speaker at the event, introduced by class valedictorian, Kiana Roberson.

Pool updates and a fire department report took up most of a relatively short 45-minute Albany city council meeting on Monday, May 13, with a special session called for May 20 because a requested item hadbeenleftofftheregular May agenda.

Plans are in place for ProjectGraduationwithcoorganizers Tisha Wilkins, Cari Heatly, and Kenzie Fairchild hammering out details for the event. The 47 members of the Albany Class of 2024 will enjoy an alcohol- and drug-free party following commencement exercises on Friday, May 24.

CareFest Battle winners announced

Winners of the Battle of the Bands competing to perform in this year’s CareFest event were announced this week, according to Ragan Riley, organizer. Sponsored by Resource Care, the annual event boasts several additional bands such as headliner, Josh Abbott Band, along with Casey Donahew, The Droptines, Tejas Brothers, and Kirk House.

Fandangle practice underway

Rehearsals for the summer performances of the Fort Griffin Fandangle started this week, and local residents interested in participating are urged to attend as soon a possible. Practices for the four summershowssetforJune 21-22 and June 28-29 are being held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays during May and the first week of June before expanding to also include Wednesdays two weeks before opening night.
