Nativity returns to Aztec Theater this weekend

The biennial presentation of the Albany Nativity is set for two performances Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13-14, at the Aztec Theater. 

As is the tradition, tickets to the performance are free of charge and will be available at the box office starting 45 minutes prior to each show. 

The show has been produced mostly on a two-year schedule since first written and performed in 1939 by Albany playwright Robert Nail. 

John Tate, portraying Moses in the Albany Nativity, rehearses with members of the Patriarchal Family for this weekend’s performances. Tickets for the biennial production are provided free of charge as a gift to the community, with the Nativity beginning at 7:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday nights.

Taxes Exceed $1 Million

Richard Petree, Interim Chief Appraiser for the Shackelford County Appraisal District, recently released information on the amount of delinquent tax ac-counts within the Tax District. 

Petree said that low col-lection rates in some of the jurisdictions prompted the investigation into the amounts due and indicated that over a million dollars in delinquent taxes are owed across all years.

Wreaths honor veterans Saturday

For the fifth year, volunteers will gather Saturday to honor veterans buried at the Albany Cemetery with a memorial wreath for the holiday season as part of the National Wreaths Across America Day observance. 

Family members and other local residents will meet at 10 a.m. at the pavilion located at the local cemetery for a brief ceremony prior to laying wreaths on approximately 625 graves. 

“We will gather a little before the program starts to hand out lists of veterans’ graves sites in the different sections of the cemetery,” Diana Nail said.

25 entries tallied in Christmas parade

OnSaturday,Nov.30,downtown Albany’s Main Street was lined with spectators eager to experience the annual Albany Lighted Christmas Parade, hosted by the Albany Chamber of Commerce. This year’s parade featured over 25 entries, with floats and participants showcasing an abundance of holiday cheer.

Tour of Homes

The Albany PTO will host its annual Christmas Parade of Homes on Sunday, December 8, from 3 to 5 p.m., with a new addition this year – a Christmas Tour Luncheon preceding the tour. The event serves as a fundraiser to support the PTO’s mission of providing school supplies for Albany students and to help fund the PTO Christmas Movie Party at the Aztec on Dec.

New appraiser hired by SCAD

Albany resident Adam Ray has been hired as appraiser by the Shackelford County Appraisal District, according to an announcement by interim chief appraiser Richard Petree. Ray and his wife, the former Emily Van Zant, moved to Albany in 2020, and Ray has been working as a fee appraiser for West Texas Appraisal in Abilene.

Shackelford 150 book available

The book commemorating Shackelford County’s 150thanniversary, Prairie Land Legacy: 150 Years of Shackelford County, is now available. The book, which honors the rich history of the county, was printed by HV Chapman and Sons in Abilene.
