Moran lost last Tuesday’s home match with Lingleville to finish pre-district with a 6-4 record, but volleyed back on Saturday, Sept. 14, to beat their first district opponent in straight sets.

“Lingleville has a strong team,” said coach Jo Hise. “We were defeated in three sets.”

According to athletic director John Hughes, the Lady Bulldogs fought to the very end, but it just wasn’t their night.

Moran lost to Lingleville 15-25, 5-25, 15-25.

Julian Winifred Jones, age 56 of Albany, Texas passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2019.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21 at Bethel Assembly in Albany, officiated by longtime pastor and friend Alan Youngblood.

Julian Jones was born July 5, 1963 in Dumas, Texas. His parents were Joe and Armitta Jones of Albany, Texas. He graduated from Albany High School with the class of 1981.

He was known for his strength, athletic ability, strong work ethic, and willingness to help anyone in need.

A discussion about chipping of discarded branches took up much of Monday night’s monthly city council meeting, with an Atmos rate increase and an increase in an airport grant both approved during the course of the evening.

Council members were in closed session at the end of the meeting for a “police department personnel matter,” but no action was taken.

Only a few hours are left to register a sale location in the 26th Annual Community Wide Garage Sale scheduled for this Saturday, Sept. 14 in Albany.

“Come in and get signed up to participate,” said Chamber manager Mary Beth Jones shortly after lunch on Tuesday. “We’ve already had seven sign up, and this was the first day to register. I’m expecting it to get even busier as it gets closer to the deadline on Thursday.”

Two new exhibitions are set to open at the Old Jail Art Center, running Sept. 14 through Feb. 1, 2020.

The Old Jail’s board of trustees is hosting a members’ opening reception at the museum this Saturday, Sept. 14 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. featuring an artists’ reception with viewing, drinks, dinner, and a dessert bar.

The first Third Thursday Studio of the year will kick off the fall season Thursday, Sept. 19 at the Old Jail Art Center.

Participants can spend a couple of hours with Tamberley Thomas and leave with a framed fall-themed painting.

The event will be held in the Stasney Center from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

On the third Thursday of each month during the school year, the adult-only classes allow participants to try different art media.

A blood drive is scheduled to take place in Albany this afternoon, Sept. 12, and Hendrick Regional Blood Center (formerly Meek Blood Center) will park its bloodmobile at First Baptist Church from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. 

Blood drives in Albany have been sponsored by the Kiwanis Club for over 20 years.

The blood center depends on volunteer blood donors to supply 100 percent of the blood that is used for patient care at 17 area hospitals. 

About three dozen local parents, citizens, and Albany ISD staff members gathered in the Aztec Theater reception room on Monday night for an hour-long “State of the School” presentation by AISD administrators.

Superintendent Jonathan Scott explained that as a Title I school, the Albany district has to follow certain guilelines that include community involvement.

“This school belongs to you, and we want to be sure we work as a team to help develop plans that will best serve our students,” said Scott.

Shackelford County commissioners confirmed times for upcoming public hearings and meetings, along with discussing repairs to a Precinct 2 bridge and title insurance for Precinct 4 voting site.

The elected officials will already need to meet for two required public hearings and then one special session to vote on the budget and tax rate before the end of the month. They opted to move the regular fourth Monday meeting time to coincide with the Friday, Sept. 20 hearing and avoid conflicting with a jury trial on Sept. 23.

The second annual CareFest, a music festival fundraiser for Resource Care took place last Saturday, and the event sold out at 6:17 p.m. that evening.

“We sold out of all types of tickets, VIP, preferred, and general admission,” said ResourceCare marketing officer Christina Daugherty. “We had somewhere around 800 to 1,000 attendees.”
