Representatives of the Lee’s Legion Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will be at the three local school campuses next week to help students celebrate the anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution, according to Lisa Echols, chairman of Lee’s Legion’s constitution week committee and vice chairman Carolyn Vick Kennedy.

Three Shackelford County youth exhibitors placed well at the West Texas Fair and Rodeo in Abilene last weekend with goats and heifers, and several other local students are entered in events this week.
Gracie Price took blue ribbons with both of her Maine Anjou heifers, Myleigh Leveridge was second with a Hereford heifer, and Brayden Sullivan claimed second in goat showmanship along with placing third and fourth in market goats.

Directors of the Albany Chest met on Wednesday, Sept. 4, to organize the 2019 fundraising drive, elect four board members, and vote on officers for the upcoming year.
The deadline for organizations to turn in funding requests was set for Friday, Oct. 4, and the board’s next meeting will be held at The Feed Store on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 5:15 p.m. to evaluate applications and decide on a fundraising target for the 2019 Chest drive.
Last year, a goal of $42,000 was set, with $42,157 raised.

MERGE high school youth group met at The Feed Store on Monday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
“Spencer Newsom and Kathryn Hamilton are doing both the junior high and high school groups this year,” said Feed Store director Tisha Wilkins. “The junior high students will have their first meeting next week.”
Campbell Terry also helped with this week’s session
Due to conflicts with after school activities, both junior high and high school youth groups will take place on Monday nights.

This weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 14 and 15, the Shackelford County Youth and Livestock show barn will host the 33rd Annual First Impressions Invitational Pig Sale, and organizers are expecting 17 consignors from four states to bring 100 pigs for the competition and sale.
“We are limiting the sale to 100 pigs this year,” said organizer Mike Parsons. “A couple of the consignors will probably come in late on Friday, but we expect most of them to arrive on Saturday, and we’ll have the auction on Sunday.”

Longtime Lion head football coach Denney Faith’s dedication and contributions to the Albany Independent School District, students, athletes, coworkers, and others in Albany were recognized at the start of last Friday night’s home football game when the playing field was officially dedicated as “Faith Field at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.”
Former Albany school board member and game announcer John Tate read the presentation from the press box a little before game time on Friday, Sept. 6.

After a pre-game ceremony when the field at Robert Nail Stadium was named for longtime head football coach Denney Faith, the Lions roared their way to a 14-0 lead in the first period against the Dublin Lions last Friday.
But the visiting Lions didn’t allow Albany to coast to an easy win, with Dublin posting two touchdowns of their own in the fourth quarter and threatening to score what could have been a game-winner late in the bout.

The Lady Lions have been busy over the past week with last-minute tune-up games against larger schools as the pre-district schedule ends and the start of the District 6-2A race gets underway.
Albany will open district at home on Saturday against Strawn. The JV Red will start the action at 10:00 a.m., followed by the varsity game at 11:00 a.m.
“The girls have been excited to start district,” coach M.J. Reneau said. “We love that our district opener is at home, and we hope our fans and community will be there to show support.”

Albany Kids Tennis Club will be holding practices at 4:30 p.m. on each of the remaining three Mondays of this month, Sept. 16, 23, and 30.
Children age six to 18 are welcome to come for a suggested donation of $15 total, or participation is free to those who are members of the Abilene Fall Junior Team Tennis League.
“Please let me know if your kids will be able to make it,” said organizer Lisa Russell. “We will practice for approximately one hour, and parents are always welcome to join us.”

The 12th Annual Albany Kiwanis Charity/John Rose & Jim Law Memorial Golf Tournament and Fajita Fiesta will take place at the Albany Golf Course on Friday, Sept. 27.
Individuals and businesses can help sponsor the Albany K Charity Scholarship Fund.
The four-person scramble is $50 per golfer, with the fee to include a Fajita Fiesta meal provided by Albany Kiwanians on Friday before the start of the tournament.
