In spite of windy conditions, local volunteer fire fighters were able to contain and extinguish a wildfire south ofAlbany on Tuesday afternoon. Personnel from the Shackelford County, Albany City, and Moran fire departmentsallresponded to a report of a fire on the YL Ranch about 3:00 p.m.

District reports preliminary STAAR, EOC scores

Preliminary scores for the spring 2024 STAAR testing for grades 3-8 and End of Course (EOC) testing for high school were released by the Texas EducationAgency over the last week, with local scores exceeding or matching statewide scores in most areas. Results were mixed compared to last year’s scores for local students in tested areas, but results were higher among nine of 14 tested areas in grades 3-8 as compared to the statewide average.

Tax abatement requested

Officials table agreement decision Well over half of Monday’s two-hour meeting of the Shackelford County commissioners was spent discussing the request for a tax abatement for an energy storage facility. Loyd Drain from Solvent Energy told elected officials that the company, owned by a French family, had been negotiating with two landowners just northwest of Albany for a battery-operated energy storage facility, which would be connected to the state power grid.

Tickets are still available for all four performances of the Fort Griffin Fandangle set for June 21-22 and June 28-29, although both Saturday shows are filling up quickly. “Both Saturday night performances are selling the fastest,” Fandangle office manager Jamie Parsons said.

Work to begin on 180 bridge

Beginningapproximately Wednesday, June 12, a Texas Department of Transportation contractor will begin cleaning and sealing the joints of the US 180 bridge over Hubbard Creek Reservoir. Thisprocessispreventative maintenancetoextend the life of the structure, according to a TxDOT press release.
